The first photobook by photographer Yurika Kono. An Autumn Diary is a work created through visits to a group of buildings designed by architect Seiichi Shirai (1905–1983) in Yuzawa, Akita. In this photographic diary, Kono emulates the bodily gestures evoked in the travelogues of novelist Fumiko Hayashi (1903–1951), who shared a close relationship with Shirai, attempting to perform a bodily presence that might have existed in that place. Drawing inspiration from research into land, history, architecture, space, and personal stories, Kono has developed her practice from the perspective of individual and everyday histories (her-stories) that have been overlooked or left out of grand narratives of history (history, his-story). Resonating with and responding to the attention Shirai and Hayashi both directed toward ordinary people, and their deep appreciation for everyday life, this book brings together photographs and diary entries that offer a new approach to Shirai’s architectural spaces, tracing how they are passed down from the past into the future. – Essays : Himari Saikawa (Architect), Kent Nakamoto (Independent curator, critic) Translation: Hikaru Isaka, Gen Machida Design: Hirotaka Honjo Printing: Hakko Bijutsu, NEUTRAL COLORS
